Amplified Scratch Art Landscapes (Middle School Focus) Scratch art is always a crowd-pleaser—but for this project, we decided to take it to the next level. Instead of the usual free-form doodles, students were challenged to design intentional landscapes using purposeful line and pattern in every section of their composition.
We started with planning—students sketched out their scenes first, mapping out different zones like sky, land, water, and structures. From there, they brainstormed ways to fill each space with bold textures and contrasting patterns using scratch tools. The focus was on composition, variety, and thoughtful mark-making, all while enjoying the classic scratch-reveal magic that makes this medium so satisfying.
✨ The results were absolutely stunning—rich in contrast, packed with detail, and full of personality. Every piece reflected a deep level of design thinking, and the finished collection looked incredible on display. We’ll definitely be keeping this one in our regular rotation!
Why It Works:This project turns a familiar medium into something elevated and skill-focused. Students learn to balance planning with spontaneity, explore the impact of line and texture, and build their understanding of composition and contrast—all while having fun with a material they already love.
