Photography Compare and Contrast
I wanted a short lesson/bell ringer/discussion starter on the pandemic because there are just so many photographic images out there. I didn't want a political discussion or opinions so I've been very careful here how this is put together. Students get to compare and contrast two images that are very similar in subject matter: a pandemic, face masks, fear, health issues, etc. — one from today and one from the Spanish Flu pandemic in 1918. This gives a background for each image, a few points and a bit of photographic history from the turn of the century. You can take this easily in to discussion of emotion, fear, anxiety, etc. and how photographers document it.
