Surrealism - what can we say!? The weird but fantastical.... Synopsis of Renee Magritte here and then 6 of his more famous pieces with background on each. Enlarged images included for display or print. Then we get to the practice which is often tricky for students to "get". There are 3 Magritte pieces: Son of Man (complete his head and lower landscape on 2), The False Mirror (outlined to complete the entire eye), and The Large Family (complete the bird and lower landscape on 2). Lastly we have examples of surreal lightbulbs and a lightbulb outline - my favorite as a final project using the prior as warm ups (but have come out so good I'll often display those as well). For the lightbulbs, choose a 1 concept bulb or multiple image surreal lightbulb (I tell the students they must include, for example, 4 things in their lightbulb such as: 1 botanical, 1 building, a pattern and a random object).
