Jasper Johns Inspired Layered Numbers

Jasper Johns-Inspired Layered Numbers

For this project our middle and high school students took inspiration from the bold, thought-provoking work of American artist Jasper Johns, focusing on his iconic number paintings. Johns is known for transforming everyday symbols—like numbers, flags, and targets—into layered, expressive works of art, and our students dove right into that spirit.

Abstract painting with overlapping shapes and vibrant colors: blue, red, green, orange. Creates a dynamic, swirling pattern. Mood is lively.

Using tracing paper, stencils, and even freehand drawing, they created compositions that layered numbers in varying sizes, orientations, and styles. Watercolor washes brought energy and movement to the pieces, while colored pencil added dimension, texture, and contrast. Each student brought their own interpretation, color choices, and rhythm to the work—making every piece a personal statement within a shared concept.

Once completed, these vibrant, abstract compositions were arranged into a stunning gallery wall that immediately drew attention. Visitors stopped in their tracks, drawn to the bold shapes, overlapping forms, and joyful explosion of color. The results were nothing short of striking!

Why it works: This project is abstract, expressive, and surprisingly accessible. It invites creativity without pressure, making it a perfect fit for students at any skill level—even those who might not see themselves as “artistic.” The layered approach also makes it ideal for a collaborative display: individual voices come through, but together they form a powerful, unified visual statement. And let’s be honest—they’re just gorgeous.
